"Formada na pequena cidade de St. Albans (Hertfordshire, Inglaterra), em 1963, os Zombies estrearam com o sublime 'She's not there', que chegou ao segundo lugar nas paradas dos Estados Unidos, mas os singles seguintes tiveram menos sucesso comercial. Depois de passar três anos praticamente em excursão, o grupo decidiu se separar, no final de 1966. O baixista Chris White convenceu os colegas a gravar um albúm de despedida - e o conhecimento prévio de que iam acabar os liberou das pressões comerciais, permitindo que gravassem exatamente o disco que queriam.
E o que queriam era espetacular. Gravado nos Abbey Road Studios logo depois que os Beatles terminaram 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band', 'Odessey and Oracles' (o primeiro albúm coeso da banda) - não mais apenas um misto de rebarbas de singles e regravações - contempla a paixão pelo jazz do tecladista Argent, mas mantém o soft-pop do grupo com arranjos mais ousados.
Colega de apartamento de White, Terry Quirk, responsável pela arte da capa, errou a ortografia da palavra 'Odyssey'. A banda decidiu deixar como estava e se separou sem grande alarde logo depois. Al Cooper, produtor da CBS, ouviuo albúm numa viagem a Inglaterra e convenceu a gravadora a lançar, em 1969, a faixa de encerramento, 'Time of the season', como single - que vendeu dois milhões de cópias em todo mundo, o que transformou, ironicamente, no maior sucesso da carreira dos Zombies."
